We have been making this for years to eat at campouts and also just for a fun sweet treat! Chocolate and peanut butter were one of our favorite combos for so long. Once our son was diagnosed with a deadly peanut allergy, we stopped making this for a time.
Then we learned that we could sub SunButter in equal parts in all our favorite recipes!
The original recipe comes from Chex, but we alter it just a tad with extra creamy SunButter!
There’s nothing better than playing in the mud, finding worms, kicking rainboots in mud puddles, and having fun snacks like Muddy Buddy’s AKA Puppy Chow! That’s exactly what we did camping this week!
One of my all time fav things about this fun recipe is that you can make it gluten free and top 8 free allergy friendly! There’s just 6 ingredients: Rice or Corn Chex; chocolate chips (consider Nestle or Enjoy Life allergy friendly chips for vegan dairy free); SunButter or a friendly nut or seed butter for you; salted butter or vegan “butter” spread; vanilla and powdered sugar!
Muddy Buddy’s AKA Puppy Chow
- 9 C Rice or Corn Chex
- 1 C Vegan Allergy Friendly Chocolate Chips Enjoy Life or Nestle Simple 3 Ingredients
- 3/4 C SunButter or other friendly nut or seed butter
- 1/4 C Salted Butter or Vegan Butter Spread vegan allergy friendly shortening could also be subbed
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 C Powdered Sugar
On medium low heat melt the butter, chocolate chips and SunButter together until smooth and completely melted through. Remove immediately, add in vanilla and mix well. Pour over Chex cereal and fold cereal with melted SunButter mixture until all the cereal is well coated. In a gallon sized bag, add powdered sugar. Place a couple cups of cereal mixture at a time into the ziplock bag, seal and shake. Continue until all cereal has been added to powdered sugar and shaken to cover well. Store at room temperature or in the fridge for 3-5 days in an airtight container.
